Is there a way to display hidden categories?

I read this thread (click here) which removes certain category id's from the script which generates the navigation links in the admin page. 

Right now, the functionality of "hiding" a category actually disables the category.  You cannot see it in the storefront.

I just want to hide the category from the navigation links produced in the admin section which is what the thread I mentioned discusses.  Unfortunately, that means you have to specify each category id you want hidden.

Is there another way or possibly something in a future release of PC which will not disable the category?
