Another option is to use the default license generator that is included when selling 'downloadable' products.  For more information, please refer to Appendix A of the ProductCart User Guide:

There is a comment field for each order and you can add content to the email that gets sent to the customer when an order is shipped but there isn't a specific field to enter a serial number, display it on the invoice or search by it. My customer wants to know if we can add a serial number for a product when they ship it. This number is used simply to track warranty information. The number would be entered when the shipping manager ships the product or pulls it from stock.

The serial number should appear on the invoice adn order information when searching invoices.

Any clue as to what we can do for this?
