Yeah, it's not really all that intuitive (spacial limitations). It's rather part of my job to go clicking all of those info icons to find out more about what everything is ;-)

Yes:

From the Manage Custom Search Fields panel you can toggle on/off "SF Details"

Custom Search Fields: Visibility on product details pages
This setting allows you to decide whether the search field should be shown on the product details page in the storefront (SF Details) or on the Modify Product page in the Control Panel (CP Details).

If the custom search field is used to store information that is not relevant to a customer in the storefront (e.g. UPC code), then you would want to choose not to show it in the storefront (SF Products option remains unchecked).
