For a long time (months / years) my 404 redirects have worked just fine.  A couple of weeks ago my 404 errors started getting 500 errors 

Specifically the error is 404b.asp line 14 "server.transfer not allowed"

for now I just rewrote it as a response.redirect.

I can't pin down what changed or what is happening.
Any ideas or sage wisdom that could be shared?
