an issue arose today that we have not encountered yet.  a customer with multiple gift certificates tried to checkout and the system would not let them use multiple gift certificates.  We were able to replicate the error, the system kept saying the coupons were invalid, BUT when entering them one at a time they were applied.  why is that?

These are purchased gift certificates they were using, not discount codes.  Any idea why they would not work in tandem?  I simply consolidated them to one manually generated coupon for the gross amount of all 3, but if there is a way to avoid this in the future I'd like to know.
