Well, it's hard to know what you are actually trying to fix, as "hit and miss" really doesn't explain what the problem is.
 
The files that run the import process are step1.asp through step4.asp. 
 
If the XLS process is timing out, you may want to edit step4-xls.asp and alter "Server.ScriptTimeout = 5400" to a greater value.

Tried .xls and it did not work for me then and still does not work a t this time.
