Hi Terry,
We also sell plants and we have done customizations to get folks to order at the appropriate time.  The best way to make the plants unavailable is to just mark them "not for sale" and you can type in any message you like as to why it is not available.  This can even be done for all the products in a category at the same time with the Global Changes admin tool. 

We have some interesting modifications to allow for only certain dates to be ordered and I am sure that some would work for you too.  Contact Greg Dinger at GreybeardDesign.com for more information on costs to implement them on your site.

Hello,
      It would be a great idea if we could have products available seasonally. We sell plants and through the summer months some become too big to post. It would be great if we could restrict availability at certain months of the year. I'm sure this could apply to other products as well. A setting in 'Other settings' would be great with drop down boxes for the months available i.e. 'from' and 'to' with the months selectable here, a text entry box for the reason the product was unavailable outside these months would be helpful.
