I take it back - it doesn't need someone who knows what they are doing.

Hi Avalight,
  If someone lifts a couple of images it's probably no big deal. If they decide to lift them wholesale then it's much more of an issue. The only protection against that is watermarks which is why all the stock image sites use watermarks.

Someone who knows what they are doing could grab all the images from your store faster than you can browse the store.  It's very unlikely to happen, but very easy to do. Removing even fairly subtle watermarks is not a trivial task.

I'm not unhappy with the watermarks these clients have elected to use for the images that are proprietary to them.  I certainly believe they are subtle, yet sufficient to prevent people from stealing them.  And both of these clients have established in-house studio work areas so they are definately defending an investment in time and resources.

I use a disable right click from DynamicDrive and have been happy with it.  I was a simple script I put in the header.asp file and other html pages on the site.  I'm sure it only thwarts the novice internet user, but it does make them go through more steps to copy photos.  That said, I haven't figured out how to get around it, so maybe it is tougher than I think or hey, I just a novice, gasp!

There are a number of Javascript routines that will do this. Search the web for "disable right click" and you'll find a bunch. We've used this one before:

Bascially you just add the Javascript code to your header.asp file and when someone clicks the right mouse button, a message is displayed and they can't copy images with theright click.
 
As you mentioned, there are a number of easy ways to get around this.

   There is, but it is a complete waste of time as it's so trivial to bypass that it really has zero value. A far far superior approach is to watermark the images, although of course it needs to be reasonably discreet or subtle to minimize the impact on the the look of the image. It's possible to batch process images to add a watermark.

or do I have to write that into code?
