I might be reaching with this one but I wanted to bounce this idea off someone before I asked my buddy to code it.

 

I want to use Product Cart's existing affiliate capabilities to track non-link referrals. My concept is to set up a coupon with a code such as "MAP" and provide it to registered affiliates as their non-link referral code, appended with their affilliate ID number, e.g. "MAP16" for affiliate #16. Affiliates will publish their code in promotions offering a discount at my site if they use the code. Then, when a referred customer buys something at the site, they enter the coupon/affiliate code ("MAP16) during checkout.  The new asp code would evaluate the coupon code entered, determine that it begins with "MAP," which means it's a referral, and then pass the affiliate's ID (#16) to the the existing Product Cart function that tracks referral activity that normally comes via an affiliate link. In addition to triggering the affiliate sale tracking features already in place, the new asp code would also strip off the affiliate ID (if needed) to process the discount associated with the "MAP" coupon code.

 

If anyone sees any obvious pitfalls with the concept, or has any tips or suggestions, I would appreciate very much hearing them before I proceed.
