I suppose I was trying to avoid duplicate categories with the same name as then you need to update them in 2 places and I worry about confusion.

Hi Sam,
You can have multiple categories with the same name, so for example you can have : Wooden Beds : Mattresses
 and
Steel Beds : Mattresses
  .. where Mattresses is a (different) subcategory of each one. You can also have a category called "All Furniture".

Hi All
 
I hope someone can answer this as it is an issue I seem to come across all the time... at the request of the client!
 
I would like to create a sub category eg. mattresses and assign this sub category to multiple root categories. This is not possible with the current configuration of PC so...
 
Can anyone advise a way to customise this - I would be grateful. The other thing the client wants is when you click on 'all furniture' all the sub categories are listed in the menu.
