Continuing from http://www.earlyimpact.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2204&KW=custom+search&PID=7729#7729 (never did find out if I was correct about the db structure anomaly).

I've now manually entered several categories/products and would definitely urge some type of option when adding product search fields to have the category custom search fields displayed. I had to do a lot of back/forth between categories and products to see what custom search fields were added to categories to match them with custom search fields on products. It gets even more confusing when a product is linked to multiple categories.

Also I figured out another area where my expectations were skewed on categories. I expected the filter to have values for categories also so that if the set up was
Beam - Lifting
Model 18
Model 22 (custom search = Capacity & Spread field)
    Category 1 (Capacity 1/2)(Spread 2,3,4,5)
    Category 2 (Capacity 1)(Spread 2,3,4,5)
    Category 3 (Capacity 1)(Spread 6,7,8)

I would then be able to "Narrow By"

Model 18
Model 22
    Capacity
       1/2
       1
    Spread
       2
       3
       4
       5
       6
       7
       8

Guess I was expecting more of a pivot table approach.
