I guess dial-up users are pretty used to slow page loads - many many sites are only written with broadband sites in mind.

"55 percent of adult Americans have a high-speed internet connectionat home, up from 47 percent in early 2007 and 42 percent in early 2005.

Among those that use the 'net at home, 79 percent have a high-speed connection and 15 percent use dialup"

Of course, those that are on dial-up are likely to be less active on the net as well. Some that I know personally just look at a couple of sites and use email and that's it.

Hamish, I tend to think you're right about the page weight, but I don't really know what the best way to minimize that is.
 
I agree (that it would be useful to compare sites).  On a side note if I go to a page that has only a single item, it still happens.  See example. http://www.quiltedbear.com/store/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=129
Also, using the websiteoptimization link, I ran the page I just linked to.  It listed a load time of 85 seconds for this page, or about half the 'page weight' of the 1st page I had linked to. 
 
On an even sidier note, I just went over my analytics really quick and my dialup visitors only make up 3%.  Pages/visit, time spent, and bounce rate were all close to my sitewide averages.  Though I suppose I could be getting less dialup traffic because my homepage takes a bit to load.  I suppose that's a topic for a different discussion.
 
If anyone has any other ideas or suggestions on how to fix this I'd appreciate your input.

  Do you mean on your website? Has it got many and/or large images used in the AJAX pop-ups?  It would be useful to compare sites.

Hi QB,
   I see the same thing with FF 3.0.1.
It seems that it happens only the first time you pass over an item, and then only sometimes. It seems to happen if you pass quickly across the items, so that it doesn't get a chance to finish one new image download for the popup before starting the next.

I do suspect that image sizes and possibly overall "page weight" MAY be involved in the error as you have 44 items on the page each around 40kb for the AJAX popup to fetch, although I believe the AJAX code fetches the images on demand. Perhaps reducing the size (in KB) of the pop-upm images would help?

Anyone else got any other ideas on this one???????

You will see that the load time for a 56k modem is 161 seconds and for a T1 (1.5mbps) around 17 seconds. In this day and age with broadband speeds much higher that in itself is not to much of an issue, as long as your happy that your pages are only easily accessible at good broadband speeds.

I'm receiving a server error when navigating my site using Firefox 3.0.1. The Ajax pop-ups don't seem to be rendering properly 100% of the time. I haven't been able to come up with an instance that will make it happen every time. Basically what happens is when you mouse over a product instead of the ajax pop-up I get an error that says, "internal server error" with no more information. I've tested my site with IE7 & 8, Firefox 3.0, Safari 3.1.2, and Chrome beta, and all of those seem to work fine.

The odd thing is that it doesn't happen every time, sometimes it the pop-up works as it should. I've looked at a few other PC sites that have ajax pop-ups using FF 3.1 and I can't duplicate the error I'm getting on my site. I contacted my host and they said it was a browser issue and they couldn't help me. Any assistance or information anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
