Hi,
   The only way I know of doing this is with some custom code.
Doing this will also probably have a small negative impact on your "Search Engine Friendliness"

If you decide to go ahead with this I would recommend  creating the images with a standard name with the category ID being the variable part of the image name - which will simplify the custom coding. I'd also strongly recommend using the Category name as the ALT text.
