What I've always wanted was a bidirectional cross sell so that if Product B is cross sell assigned to Product A, then there wouldn't be a need to set up another cross sell to assign Product A as a cross sell to Product B.

Doesn't that go against the ethos/idea of cross selling?
The premise of cross selling is, surely, to  guide your customer to related items that will be of interest & matched well with their selected product, just like a good sales assistant  - for example -
Select a high-end expensive TV & be directed to a high end surround sound system.
Select a mid budget TV - be guided to a mid budget & well matched surround sound system.  

Of course, I've no idea what your site sells so it may be different in your situation.
